In traditional Clematis speak these would be "group 3 types," and more specifically Integrifolia types, based on the parent species. In reality you don't need to think of them so much as Clematis, just think of them as solid garden perennials. They die back to the ground each fall and bloom on upright or gracefully arching stems. As they mature they get taller, increasing the likelihood that they may lean on or scramble through their neighbors. You can choose to support them a bit or just let them find their way.
