Thank you for your interest in employment at Ardelia Farm. We are postponing any hiring activity until we have a better concept of the fallout from Covid-19. At present the markets that purchase our cut sweet peas are not even open for business. Additionally, we are not allowed to operate as per Vermont law as floriculture has been deemed nonessential work. Feel free to submit a resume. We hope by early summer we will be in a position of needing help, but we are not able to proceed at this time.
Now hiring sweet pea trainers!
We are seeking full and part time help on our cut flower farm in Irasburg, Vermont for the 2020 summer season. The season runs roughly May 15 through Oct 15.
For those unfamiliar with cordon training of sweet peas, it is essentially the same process as training greenhouse tomatoes. The growth of each plant is limited to one central leader. All additional growth is removed, encouraging the plant to produce long flower stems. Each plant is trained twice weekly. No prior knowledge of this process is required, but prior farm, greenhouse or horticultural experience is preferred. Job requirements include:
- Good manual dexterity and precision
- Ability to work quickly and with a sense of urgency
- Capacity to perform the same task day after day
- Ability to work well alone and as part of a team
- Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds
- Positive, can-do attitude
- Ability to work in tight spaces
If you get bored easily this job is not for you. You may wear headphones and listen to music or podcasts if you wish, but only if you can do so without being distracted by your phone, as excessive cell phone usage is not permitted.
This job requires you to be on your feet all day, but will occasionally require kneeling or squatting for extended periods of time. While the job will be 90% training plants in a greenhouse setting you may also be asked to harvest, bunch and pack flowers, haul and spread compost, prepare beds for planting, transplant, weed and work in our open fields as well. Our greenhouses are open to the elements, and while the Vermont summer is quite pleasant, you will occasionally need to work in hot, cold or wet conditions. You will experience mud, bugs, smelly things, dogs, cats, other humans, sweat, worms, spiders, rain, sun, wind and dirt. This is a farm, and this is farm work. Generally you will be working as a team, but on occasion individual work is necessary.
Ardelia Farm & Co. is a gay-owned business, and we do not tolerate descrimination based on race, ethnicity, sex, age, sexual orientation or gender identity. We strive to maintain a work environment that is calm, positive, supportive, fun, and totally drama-free.
This is an hourly position. Pay is commensurate with work experience, with a base rate of $15/hr. Weekend work will occasionally be required. All team members accrue paid time off. We are unable to offer housing. Other little perks may include occasionally being fed lunch, access to cookies and other treats from our bakery, and fresh flowers.
