Orange You Awesome Echinacea Plant
Swan Song Echinacea Plant

Echinacea has gotten quite a lot more complicated than when I first grew it when I was a kid. Back then it was all seed grown, and it was purple or white. Things have changed.

There are still seed grown strains (such as Magnus, Pow Wow, Cheyenne Spirit) that are fine examples of the genus in an ever wider array of colors.

We also now have all sorts of odd shapes and colors to choose from, thanks to tissue culture cloning techniques. Sadly many of these seem to have lost some of their vigor in exchange for ruffly centers or twisty petals. I've had no such problems with these sturdy introductions from Walters Gardens. They establish and bloom well their first year quickly bulking into good sized clumps.

Like their native prairie ancestors, they all want full sun, and can take hot and dry conditions as well as cold winters. Leave seed heads on the plant for winter interest and to feed the birds. Or cut them off and use them in dried arrangements. They make vibrant and long lasting cut flowers.
