52 Dinners - Week 27: When the Wigs Came Out
Last week I had the great pleasure of going down to Philadelphia for a couple days to visit my dearest friend John and his boyfriend Anthony. The pair are moving to NYC in August, so I wanted to pay them one last visit before they got all caught up in the hustle bustle.
John and I always have a riot when get together. We were roommates before I met Bailey, and we were able to make a whole lot of memories together in just a few years. I offered to make dinner for us one night.
What I thought would be a cute little low-key affair turned into quite a kiki.
Anthony’s fabulously over-the-top Italian aunties Carrie and Kimmy happened to be visiting them from Chicago last weekend.
John & Anthony’s friend Owen is currently subletting their guest room while he’s in town for work for a couple months, and Owen’s friend Zach was in town just for one night. And then their amazing neighbor Miss Charlotte came by. So it’s a good thing I always cook for a crowd!
Aunt Kimmy and I made bruschetta with garlic, tomato, basil, mozzarella, good olive oil, and balsamic. Perfect with prosecco on a hot summer evening.
We then had a big salad, sauteed zucchini with lemon, and spaghetti and meatballs. I brought my pasta roller down to make the spaghetti and the aunties were very impressed with my tomato sauce (gravy).
Turns out that their parents owned an Italian restaurant in Chicago for many years and they basically grew up in the kitchen...so there you go.
I was able to make the sauce and meatballs ahead of time and bring them down with me.
For dessert I brought a box of assorted goodies from my bakery, and Miss Charlotte said that the flourless chocolate cake was the best thing she’d ever eaten.
We drank too much wine, we danced, we laughed, and eventually the wigs came out. It was exactly what I needed.
