52 Dinners - Week 20: Salad Bar for 30 (Complete With Little Tongs)
Congratulations Ally and Colin!
Ally is my right hand woman in the bakery during farmers’ market season and also works with us on the farm.
She and her charming partner Colin graduated from college back in December but had their commencement ceremony yesterday, and last night we hosted a party for their families and friends.
You know when you say something once and for some reason it sticks with you forever?
One day last summer I told Ally that I was going to whip up a salad for us for lunch and she replied with something like “Great, I like salad.”
But somehow that evolved into me thinking that she’s obsessed with salad and it’s her favorite thing in the world. So of course we had a salad bar for their party.
You guys, if you want to feed a crowd but maybe don’t have a big budget, you aren’t a great cook, and/or need everything to be prepared ahead of time, think about a salad bar.
It’s fun, easy, and beautiful. You can be creative, thematic, or super simple. Everything is prepared ahead of time and can sit out for a couple hours. It’s great if you have friends with food allergies or restrictive diets. Rabbits love it too.
And if you don’t have a collection of serving bowls, platters, and compotes, it’s easy enough to pick up a bunch of matching white or glass bowls at the dollar store or Ikea. And you can always find little tongs and dainty serving spoons at thrift stores. Trust me, EVERYONE loves using little tongs.
Along with a big bowl of nice local greens we had some wild Alaskan sockeye, roasted Hillside Farm chicken, hard boiled eggs, garbanzos, raw veggies, roasted beets, toasted nuts and seeds, apples, dried fruits, cheeses, olives and pickles, some homemade herbaceous croutons, and a couple of quicksalad dressings (plus a big vanilla/vanilla cake).
Even with expensive proteins and all organic veggies, I fed 30 people for under $200.
FYI my birthday is later this month and if anyone is looking for gift ideas, the answer is always little tongs.
